new manager and new chef
Had the rib eye and my friend had the sea bream fillet. Both dishes were excellent. Lotty the new manageress has turned the pub round in just a few weeks. The beers are now looked after professionally and are really on song. Staff are friendly and helpful and the new chef is proving to be real winner. Weekly specials and a new range of bar snacks are great too see. It won't be long before this pub becomes one of the best in the area. Well done we need this to happen. Give it a try, support your local.
Good food quality Burger, Cod dish and Fish and Chips
I was hesitant after reading some reviews. Food is definitely worth a try I had the burger nice and moist with homemade twice cooked chips it was lovely. The Cod dish looked amazing nice crispy skin with caramelized Chicory. Third dish was beer battered fish and chips it looked beautiful. Had a large glass of Savignon £8 ish about right for the quality. Dominique who looked after our table was excellent I'll definitely be back.
So, as the reviews say the Red Lion has seen some ups and downs over recent years, however I’m so happy to see the changes that are resulting from a new General Manager and new chef in our local pub. Have eaten here a couple of times in the last two weeks, what a difference! The food is great and arrives in good time - I have to recommend the home made mac & cheese with brisket ends, simply delicious! It’s clear the team are happy, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming! Great job Lottie & team! Well worth a visit, and with the sun shining there’s a great beer garden at the rear of the pub!
Very much improved
Lovely meal, service was very good. Really good atmosphere, lovely and clean. Great to have a proper village pub again.
Traditional country pun
Quaint location, outstanding food, excellent service. Sometimes there is a wait for food, even if there aren't many full tables, but everything is made from scratch and you can really taste it! Staff are really friendly and the chefs will accommodate any need. Traditional pub complete with pub dog and Mr Darcy in the ladies toilet, no complaints there either!
Now with an excellent varying menu - something for everyone - a quality offering. We were served crab thermidor from the 'specials' menu and simply could not be more delighted. An uprated kitchen apparently and 2 chefs promise an exciting future for this pub.
A welcome change
We have just returned from lunch at The Red Lion and pleased to report that it is under new management. Fabulous steak and chips and good service. Will return again soon.
new chef and new menu
New chef and new menu plus bar snacks. Tried the calamari - excellent Quails egg scotch eggs are moorish Looking forward to trying more from the menu Seriously give it try Don't think you will be disappointed
Beautiful Country Pub - let's support our local!
It's my second visit now to the Red Lion since it's opening at the start of the month and I feel compelled to write this review so that both visitors and the management at the Red Lion can get an honest perspective from a local person. I'm delighted that the pub has reopened - in a time when many 'locals' have been closing down its important for the sake of our community that we support our local - the Red Lion is a wonderful country pub located in Upper Basildon - the refurbishment is simple but tastefully done. The staff are welcoming and the atmosphere on the last few Fridays has been electric - bringing back memories of times gone by. It's a new beginning for the new team and I wish them every success. Personally I would love to see some simple rustic - family friendly lunch options on the menu too - hearty food - good portions - soups , sandwiches, baguettes etc - keep it simple Let's get behind our local and help make it the heart of our community
Very pleasant little country pub and eatery.
Visited on a Tuesday lunchtime - the pub was fairly empty with just a few diners so we found a table easily enough (you can eat in the main bar but they do have a restaurant area behind the fireplace). We ordered some drinks - I had a very nice pint of the local West Berkshire Brewery's beer and then selected our lunch from the smaller menu (they do a set lunch of 2 or 3 courses but you can choose from the main menu as well). We both decided on prawn cocktails (hadn't had one for ages!). My wife then had the bream while I went for the liver with bacon and onions (again a dish I hadn't eaten for years). Both were very good although not huge portions but adequate for lunch. Pudding or not pudding? Why not! Rhubarb sponge with ginger and more rhubarb and ice cream - yummy! (if you like rhubarb of course). Reasonably priced meal - 3 courses was obviously more expensive than 2 but we indulged ourselves! You will probably need a car top get to The Red Lion but there is a bus stop right outside (restricted service). Lovely countryside and not rally that far from the likes of Reading or Wallingford or even Newbury. Service was fine but it was quiet so things may be different on a busy weekend evening.
